GEORGE CAMPBELL

Just came across the site for the first time, thanks to Alastair Chisholm. It's strange to come across the names Venters and Holland half a century (to the very year)after I sailed with them as a (very) small boy on the good ship Silver Fox to Pait, the childhood home of my late father (also George Campbell). Best wishes to you all.

myself and my family have been visiting cannich for many years. my grandparents then my parents with myself, brothers, sister and friends in tow...its a beautiful part of the country and the friends we have made over the years make it extra special. My brother proposed to his girlfriend at the top of Glen Affric and my daughter was christened in the church in Cannich. So many happy memories of fantastic holidays.

I will be in Scotland in May and would like to visit Strathglass as Chisholms and Frasers from there emigrated to NS around 1800.
Cannot actually find Strathglass on any maps. Are Strathglass and Glen Affric one and the same? If not, can you clarify. How far from Fort Wm? How far from Inverness? On what highway? Thanks.

I am looking for information on Donald Chisholm (Gobha) who was born around 1735 and emigrated to Canada in early 1800. He was a poet and sheep farmer from Upper Glen Affric. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have been conducting research on my family. I was trying to find "Firth of Beauty" (Black Isle) My 7th generation grandmother, Isabelle McKenzie - Bain (husband William Bain) She was born in 1725 in Strathglass and was buried on the Black Isle(Firth of Beauty)Dec. 25,1815. Her son (my side) Hugh Bain was born(1764) in Glasgow and died in 1810 in North Carolina, in the United States. I wish to communicate with someone that could help me trace these ancestors. Thank you so much. Sandra Sonnenburg DeSoto, Missouri, USA

We would love to find any information regarding the standing stone in the garden of The Stone House formerly known as Mauld Cottage The cottage is situated just over Struy Bridge. This property was once owned by Baroness Stackelburgh. We have always been curious about the hisory of the stone since holidays there as a family 35yrs ago and passing by many times since. Any information would be welcome.

I now live near Seattle, but my first job on leaving Cambridge U was with the Hydro Electric Board of Scotland. I lived in a camp in Cannich and helped build one of the dams on Lake Benevean. It's a million years ago but I still remember with fondness the beautiful scenery and the pretty Hielan' Lassies.

I now live in Manchester, UK, but in my study I have a picture which is identical to the one on the homepage from the Frame Shop in Inverness. I think I bought it in 1997.
Kinda funny, but I always thought that the view was one which only I would ever have to remember for all time. Now it seems that everyone who visits the website will have it also.
C'est La Vie!
Beautiful site and joyous memories of the most wonderful Glen in the world.

How could anyone in their right mind come up with such a proposal. The beauty of the valley will be forever spoiled. One of the main reasons people come to this part of the world is for the beauty. "Bury the Pylon scheme" now.

I have visited the glen now on 2 occassions once in 1995 and 2004. I plan to visit Inverness in Aug 2005. My interest in the area is as a result of being a distant relative of the Boa family who used to live at Benula Lodge cannich and Lungard before that. I have met Iain Mackay in Inverness in 1995 and had a great conversation with him. I have lost his phone number and address. Indeed we used to exchange xmas cards, I know he lives in Beauly and would like to get in contact with him again. If any members of the Boa family would like to get in contact with me then please do. If anyone knows Iain Mackays address then would they please forward it to me. Cheers Kevin

shaun macdonald | banosmacdonald@freenet.co.uk

As a infrequent but regular visitor to Strathglass, it was a real pleasure to view from afar the beauty of the glen in the pictures and to read all the detailed activities. I hope to use some of the services provided and view the sky/mountain/water combinations next week whilst on holiday, weather permitting!
As an aside, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers my great uncle Charlie or great aunt Betty (married to Jock Maclennan formerly of Maryburgh), or come to that grandfather Ewen (?), who all hailed from Struy where their father Peter (?) was linked to the estate, in order to start generating more detail around the family line. This is a struggle as the male macdonald line does not last long enough to pass on the family history! Some may also remember my own father Peter who visited the glen every summer as a boy to stay with his grandfather and namesake.
Appreciate any insights or links anyone can make for me. Thanks.
Let's hope the hot weather continues!

Each year for the last 10 years I have walked the trail round Loch Affric. It is a relatively easy walk but the scenery never fails to astound me. It is a walk that I would recommend to everyone. The route from the Keepers Lodge rightt through to Dornie I recommend should also be made at some stage. You will not be disappointed. This April I intend to walk the climb up to the summit of Sgurr Na Lapaich and Mam Sodhail. Having explored most of the Glen these two mountains I am looking forward to exploring and will be the culmination of many pleasing hours spent in the most favourite of my Scottish Glens. If you enjoy Scottish scenery and have never visited this Glen then you have missed a true pleasure.

I love this website! Having formerly worked in Cannich at the YHA hostel, now some years ago (summer of 98), it is fabulous to revisit this way. Very interested to see the guided walks on offer. Well done Margaret Wilson!
I have good memories of a Thistle Group from the Scottish National Trust doing environmental work. Thanks to all the groups, and there are others who do this, who are tree planting, path maintaining and monitoring wild life.
I look forward to returning one day before long.
All the best from Hobart, Tasmania.

I enjoyed your website and of course its a beautiful and enchanting place - I don't get there often enough!
I was up at Christmas with my brother & sisters and our families to visit our father's grave at St Mary's Eskadale where we buried him 25 years ago - alongside his grandparents and great-grandparents. Our Mother died last summer so we took her ashes there and reunited them after all this time.
I will always come back - as often as the demands of our furious 21st century lives allow!

Returned from my three day visit - WOW - a must see in Autumn! Stayed (again) at Kerrow House on the River Glass by Tomich but this time in one of the 'chalets' (the word doesn't do it justice). Met the neighbours (sheep!) and the pet peacock that eats from your hand. The falls are amazing.

I am due to visit for three days in two weeks time. Glen Affric has to be among the most fantastic places in Scotland. I first found it by accident when a friend and I got 'lost'. This was five years ago and I have been back two or three times. I live in another wonderful part of Scotland - Moray Coast in Buckie, a small fishing community. When I think of Glen Affric the word 'awesome' does it for me! The village with it's Victorian lights is so pretty. I know I shall enjoy this 'awesome' place when I come again.

Having this minute finished reading Isolation Shepherd by Iain R Thomson I feel compelled to visit this area to get the true fealing of the place. I would love to know what happened to Iain Thomson after leaving Strathmore and thank him for the escapism I fealt when reading his shepherds life. I've walked all through the outer hebrides but this is one place I must visit, hopefull before its not too late for my 6 month old son Finlay to appreciate too.

Webmaster comments: -  Iain Thompson, now an organic farmer, still lives in Strathglass. He has published a second excellent book, The Long Horizon (see publications page for details or visit www.strathglass.co.uk). I believe he is working on a third title hopefully published in the not to distant future.

Patricia Venters

I am married to Martin (Tiny) Venters who was the last Married shepherd at PAIT prior to Lock Monar being flooded in about 1962/63. Being only 21 at that time and not a good cook I remember well cooking for the following Shepherds at the clipping (shearing) Lanbing in the 60's I only hope those shepherds will forgive me for the quality of my soup which I used to cook for the meals. My main supporter who used to say do not worry where on earth are we going to go anyway was "Willie John Macrae" my dear and educational friend who used to teach me the local history. So the guys Were My husband Tiny and his brother John, Willie john Macrae, Jimmy Jack, Kenny McColl, Bruce Cameron, David Holland, Ian Mackay, Sandy Thompson and his Father I use to call Mr Thompson of "Fairburn" (The farm Manager), Alan Flemming, Hector Jack and Niel who I cannot remember his surname. The boy that used to stay with Tiny and I Johnny Petigrew. Some times they were all sitting down to eat and I would really panic. Best wishes to all who remember me.

David Holland was assistant game keeper at Monar under Alan Fleming then as well. Willie John was Shepherd at Dannie and one of my dogs was from Jimmy Jack could that guy train dogs.
