Travelling to Strathglass
The maps show the main travel routes - air, road and rail into Inverness from the south together with the local roads around Strathglass. Despite repeated calls little has been done to upgrade the major roads into the area - A9, A82 and A96. Therefore drivers are urged to show caution at all times especially during busy periods. The main airport in the Highlands is 8 miles east of Inverness. Principal railway stations are in the centre of Inverness and at Beauly and Muir of Ord. There is a coach terminal also in the Highland capital.
On the Road
Road access to Strathglass and the villages of Cannich, Tomich and Struy is via the A831 that runs from Drumnadrochit (Loch Ness) to Beauly. Cannich, the main point of entry to the Glen Affric NNR, is approximately 12 miles from Drumnadrochit and 17 miles from Beauly.
We would ask visitors to drive carefully and be mindful of other road users - this includes cyclists and people on foot, as well as other drivers! The section of the A831 between Cannich and Struy is quite narrow but has ample passing places to allow vehicles to pass safely. Slower moving vehicles should also use the passing places to pull over and permit following vehicles to overtake. Passing places should not be confused with lay-bys. Red deer can be a hazard to road users at any time of the year particularly on quieter roads at night or early morning. |
